Computer-Related Vision Problems
Take The On-Line Quiz

Date: June 25, 2006

Recently, a large ophthalmic company, Vistakon, released an interactive quiz to help educate consumers about common computer-related vision problems. According to a national survey, 75 percent of all jobs in the U.S. rely on computers, and most employees spend 72 percent of their time working on the computer during a typical 40-hour work week. Studies have shown that the majority of those working at a computer have some level of eye or vision problems. The increasing popularity of smaller, portable gadgets may also contribute to visual fatigue and discomfort.

The unique characteristics and high visual demands of computer work and play make many individuals susceptible to the development of eye and visual related problems. With the proliferation of portable electronic devices such as laptops, PDA's, and video game players, it's no surprise that eye care professionals are seeing more patients who complain of ocular discomfort.

Several studies show that visual symptoms occur in 75-90 percent of computer workers. In a national survey of optometrists, respondents indicated that 14 percent of patients presented with eye or vision-related symptoms resulting from computer work. In order to prevent and reduce the development of vision related computer problems the following recommendations should be considered:

  1. Reduce glare- extraneous light is the greatest source of strain for computer users. Adjust direct light sources, purchase a glare screen and have computer glasses with an anti-glare coating.
  2. Check your contact lenses - there are lenses on the market specifically designed to wear for long periods of time with increased comfort such as Acuvue Oasys with HydroclearTM Plus.
  3. Adjust your monitor - place the center of the screen five to nine inches below your horizontal line of sight.
  4. Take a break - take a 20 second break every 20 minutes and focus your eyes on points at least 20 feet from your terminal.
