Clinical research trials are underway to investigate a new potential treatment for the wet form of AMD. PhotoPoint is an experimental treatment that may slow down or halt the progression of wet AMD. PhotoPoint, generally known as photodynamic therapy, uses a light-activated (photoreactive) drug in combination with a low power red light. During the PhotoPoint office procedure, the patient receives an intravenous (IV) infusion of the photoreactive drug SnET2. The drug circulates to the abnormal blood vessels located under the macula of the retina. A short time later, a low-power laser beam is aimed at the macula through the pupil of the eye to activate the drug. This treatment has the potential of destroying the targeted abnormal vessels without damaging normal blood vessels and tissue. We are hopeful that this new treatment will be successful. If you would like more information about the clinical trials please contact our office.
To prevent vision loss from AMD anyone over the age of 60 should have regular eye examinations. In addition one may benefit from good nutrition and protection from the sun. Eating foods high in Lutein-zeaxanthin content may provide some protection to the macular area of the retina. The following is a list of various fruits and vegetables with Lutein-zeanxanthin content:

In addition to eating healthy, one may take a vitamin supplement containing anti-oxidants and minerals such as zinc and selenium. There are currently studies being done to determine if these supplements are beneficial. It is also known that smoking doubles your risk for the development of AMD.
Therefore the best way to protect your eyes from AMD would be to follow the following recommendations:
1. Quit smoking
2. Eat food high in antioxidants and carotenoid-rich vegetables
3. Limit alcohol consumption
4. Control your levels of cholesterol and treat any high blood pressure and heart disease
5. Stay out of the sun and always wear ultra violet protective eyewear with a hat
6. Consider taking a vitamin to supplement your diet
